From the Gateway Arch to Floyd's obelisk; from visitors' centers to historic markers throughout the more than 7000 miles traversed, Lewis and Clark are kept in grateful memory for their inspiring work of opening the gateway to the west. Within the music is a significant amount of symbolism, explained in the program notes. The work's slow portion pays homage to the only fatality of the expedition, Sgt George Floyd.
