From the Shadow's Edge (Brass Quintet & Percussion), Dr. Daniel Thrower

Composed by Dr. Daniel Thrower. Duration: 5:00. This work was commissioned by hornist Alen Zidlicky to honer her WWII refugee grandmother Beluse Ulrich Zidlicky, "Babi," and features the horn. The music begins in aural darkness, immersed in an inescapable shadow. This dark introduction transitions out of the shadow, and hope permeates in the brightness, once escaped from the shadow's ominous edge. The complex nature of the thematic overlapping and polyphonic texture provides feelings of unrest, anticipation, hope, and yes, heroism, aptly portrayed with the soaring solo horn! This work celebrates those who press on with a brightness of hope even in life's darkest shadows.
