Away (Trumpet & Piano), Dr. Daniel Thrower

This single-movement, through-composed, somber, pensive composition flowered in the spring of 2004 during a long year of the composer's extensive commuting. The beginning and end hint toward B-flat major, though there is no tonic - symbolically no "home" key. The work was premiered that spring in a faculty recital. The accompaniment was originally harp, but due to chromatic difficulties and for practical performability, it was adapted for piano. With proper pedal usage, a grand piano successfully produces a beautiful harp-like effect. "Away" was premiered on trumpet in C, though a part for B-flat trumpet or flugelhorn is also included.
